PEACE IN ACTION
FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Peace in Action Fellowship Program

The Legacies of War: Peace in Action Fellowship Program is the first of its kind to expand new leadership in the Lao Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) sector and requires an emphasis on training a new generation of leaders who will be critical in collaborating with and continuing to build the capacity of existing stakeholders, as well as in raising awareness about this issue within the U.S. through public education and advocacy.

The purpose of the fellowship program is to serve as a leadership pipeline by providing emerging leaders from Laos and the U.S., the opportunity to spend time in the United States and in Laos, including working directly with professional counterparts in individually tailored work placements with relevant private and/or public sector organizations working on the UXO issue in Laos. During these placements, Fellows build their practical expertise, leadership skills, and professional networks.  After the completion of the program, the fellow will commit to working in the UXO sector for at least one year.

Rekindling Hope

The program will incorporate passionate young leaders to contribute to existing projects and will require applicants to submit their own proposals for projects related to the UXO issue in Laos, thereby spurring innovation in the sector writ large. At the outset, the fellowship is envisioned as a pilot project, which will ideally lay the foundation for a more long-term endeavor post program where fellows can carry out their professional work impacting the UXO sector in clearance, removal, and victim assistance in Laos and the U.S.

Lighting New Legacies

The fellowship is made for building an expansive network of young leaders who will carry on the torch for the future of the Lao UXO sector. Included in this network is a circle of leadership formed by Legacies of War of advisors, mentors, institutions, and organizations that will provide ongoing resources, expertise, and guidance for the fellows during the program.

The cost for the Fellowship Program is $100,000 annually, to cover 2 fellows.

The funds requested cover travel, cost-of-living stipend, lodging, conference registrations, program coordination and staffing costs. The pilot program would begin in the first quarter of 2020.

Half of the duration of the fellowship program will be based in the U.S. with possible tasks including policy research, legislative advocacy, communications strategizing and fundraising initiatives. The other half will be spent in Laos with possible tasks including technical assistance to UXO removal teams, consultation with UXO sector entities working on victim assistance and field studies for research purposes, among other potential activities.
